cincinnatus
the farmer-soldier ideal
Cincinnatus was celebrated as a model of civic virtue and embodiment of the farmer-soldier ideal, the plebeian farmer who tills the earth in times of peace and rushes to battle in times of war. Appointed dictator of Rome for six months, Cincinnatus stepped down after only two weeks following victory over Rome’s enemies. He is typically pictured holding the fasces (a bundle of rods wrapped around an axe, a symbol of Roman authority and power) and a plow.
